These are sanctions issued by countries or the United Nations that trigger the reduction or removal of diplomatic ties, such as embassies. The “severance of diplomatic relations” is one of the possible measures specifically mentioned in Article 41 of the UN Charter. Historically diplomatic sanctions have been one of the more frequently used forms of sanctions, and have been previously applied in the following regimes: Southern Rhodesia, Libya, Yugoslavia, Angola, Sudan and Afghanistan/Taliban/Al-Qaida.
